To help stop the spread of invasive species, especially those that are not yet well established in Ulster County, we offer free invasive species identification services this year.
Ulster County residents who find a plant and insect that they are concerned may be an invasive species can bring it to our office located at 232 Plaza Road (Hannaford Plaza) in Kingston for a free positive identification and recommendations. You may also email a photo to the Master Gardeners using this form
Some species of particular concern in our region are emerald ash borer, brown marmorated stink bugs, Japanese Knotweed, Asiatic Bittersweet, and Giant Hogweed (if you think you have giant hogweed on your property, do NOT touch it – call the CCEUC office 845-340-3990 for more assistance).
Invasive species have a significant impact on our economies, our environment, and our health. Many of the invasive plants causing problems today, like Japanese knotweed, were originally imported as ornamentals. Recent increases in global trade have created new opportunities for the spread of both intentional and non-intentional exotic species. Zebra mussels, for example arrived in the ballast water of ships.
Even though only a small percentage of introduced species become invasive, the damage they cause is significant. The need for a national early detection and rapid response (ED/RR) system to prevent the spread of invasive species before they are well established has been recognized in order to deal with this increasing threat.
