Nutrition Programs

Welcome to our nutrition home page! Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County offers free and low-cost educational workshops and lots of useful information on food-related topics from food safety and nutrition to healthy eating on a limited budget. Nutrition Education:

• SNAP-Ed Program provides community-based nutrition education and obesity prevention activities targeted to SNAP and SNAP eligible populations. ESNY also works on policy, systems and environmental changes to improve access to healthy food. Currently, PSE work is focused on School Wellness Policies, Smarter Lunchrooms and Food Pantries. (Funded by NIFA through OTDA and CCEOC)
• Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) works with low-income families and youth to increase healthy eating and physical activity practices while teaching participants budgeting skills. Educators work with individuals, groups, schools, and home daycare providers over an 8-week program. (Funded by NIFA through Cornell University)
• Hudson River Fish Advisory Program (HRFA) provides education and resources on the safety of eating fish from the Hudson River and its tributaries while providing research data for the NYS Department of Health. HRFA is a regional program (Columbia-Greene, Dutchess, Orange & Ulster Counties) (Funded by NYSDOH through CCEDC)
• Kitchen Classes are offered monthly for a fee. Home Food Preservation and Kitchen classes target residents that wish to improve their culinary skills and serve healthier meals. (*This program is currently on hold. We will resume soon!)
• ServSafe is offered monthly for a fee and is a Food Manager Certification course for professionals working in the food industry. (*This program is currently on hold. We will resume soon!)
• Home Food Preservation provides tested guidelines for safely preserving foods. Cooperative Extension offers both information and hands-on, small group training in a variety of home food preservation topics. (*This program is currently on hold. Please visit our page for valuable resources!)
