Isabel Harcourt-Ramon, 16 years old of Wallkill, NY, was awarded the 2019 4-H Master Showmanship title at this year’s Ulster County Fair on Sunday, August 4. Isabel, a natural educator, is known in the 4-H community for providing assistance and help to fellow 4-Hers. She even provided trainings on cattle handling for her competitors before the 4-H Master Showman competition. She is quoted as saying “even though I was focused on winning I still wanted to help others learn.” 4-H Master Showmanship recognizes excellence in showing animals and encourages youth to learn to show a variety of animals. She qualified for the contest by excelling in Senior Showmanship in beef cattle, rabbit, goat, poultry and swine, which allowed her to advance to the final competition with seven peers; each youth showed Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Dogs, Goats, Poultry, and Rabbits. This was her 2nd time competing in the Master Showmanship competition and she spent lots of time practicing and working with animals.
Judges score each 4-H Showperson on her/his showmanship skills with each animal, including posing/handling of the species and knowledge-related questions. Isabel is finishing her 11th year in 4-H and has had a distinguished 4-H career. She is a talented public speaker who has participated and qualified this year for State-level competitions in our 4-H Public Speaking Program and Horse Showmanship Program. She represented Ulster County last May at 4-H Capital Days, which is a citizenship and leadership opportunity to meet with elected officials in Albany.
Isabel is going into her junior year at Wallkill High School and enjoys the many science and mathematics based courses she is taking. Isabel is in the process of searching for colleges/universities that offer livestock veterinarian programs. Isabel is an active member in the 4-H Teen Council, Ulster County MuttMasters, Animal Squad, Outstanding Crazy Crew, and Animals & Co. 4-H clubs. Isabel has also volunteered to help take care of horses at a local equine center for the past three years. Other 4-H projects include community service and numerous animal species.
