Emu Talk-Emu 101

  • Thursday, May 26, 2022, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Curious about emu? Tune into Emu Talk—a virtual series presented by Cornell Cooperative Extension Ulster County—with Kymara Lonergan, founder of Thunderhorse Hollow Farm, Ulster Park, NY, and Christopher Barth, Founder of Warbirds Emu Farm, located in North Central Florida. Kymara and Chris will present emu handling, care, housing, breeding, hatching, feeding, and anything else you may want to know about emu farming! Emus can be silvopasture dwellers and are an option for micro-farms. They can be easy to care for, provide opportunities for agricultural profit, and have a low environmental impact. Learn about adding these birds to your existing livestock inventory and how to begin from the perspective of two farmers who experience two different farming climates—cold Northern and the hot Southern United States.

The first Emu Talk, Emu 101, will occur via zoom on Thursday, May 26, from 12:00-1:00 pm. The class will provide general information and answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about emus. This workshop is free to attend, but you must register in advance. Future classes will feature guest experts and topics including cooking with emu, emu skincare products, crafting with emu eggs and feathers, emu emergency preparedness, eggs 101, the mystery of emu oil, and emu for your no-kill farm.

Kymara Lonergan is the founder of Thunderhorse Hollow Farm, a no-kill emu, horse, organic flower, and herb farm located in Ulster Park, NY. She has been handling all types of birds for many decades but found her true passion with emus. Kymara has been involved with agricultural projects since the early years of 4-H while growing up in Litchfield County, CT. While working as a Registered Nurse and Emergency Responder, she founded The Southern Maine Medical Reserve Corps and developed an interest in farm emergency management. She is Vice President of The American Emu Association and Director of Regions 1&2.

Christopher Barth is the founder of Warbirds Emu Farm, located in North Central Florida. He has been raising and breeding emu for sale for over ten years and currently has 39 emus living on his farm. Chris has a highly respected presence on various social media sites and has become known as the go-to source for answers about emu care from individual emu owners to universities all over the US and in international situations. Chris is known as The Emu Guru amongst many who seek emu care information
