Vegetable Gardens for Everyone Series: Get the Most Out of Your Garden

  • Monday, April 19, 2021, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

This is the final, and possibly the most important session because this is when we’ll tell you how to maintain garden vigor and get the most out of it from spring through fall! Time will be dedicated to using fertilizers, compost, and more. And finally, a session on problem solving that will train you to know what to look for, identify what’s happening to your plants and recommendations for resolving the problem.

Extending the Season 9:00 am

Due to the warming climate, spring comes 8 days earlier, and late fall is often still warm. For gardeners, it means cleaning up and enjoying our yards, but there is still time to grow. This class is for people willing to take a few risks, willing to press the envelope to get more food out of their gardens, even if they have to brush off a little snow. We will cover the crops that work best, how to time their use, and what equipment and supplies you need to keep the garden going. Add to your garden’s bounty!

Nourish Your Garden 10:30 a.m.

Our vegetable gardens work hard to grow and produce fresh, nutritious veggies. All that growth activity comes at a cost to the soil, but the good news is we can help to maintain good soil quality by practicing some of the tips you’ll learn today. We will be discussing the benefits of each of these methods: compost, manure, cover crops, the benefits of crop rotation, and the appropriate use of fertilizers.

Veggie Problem Solving 12 p.m

Don’t let pests, diseases, or mysterious problems cause you to throw in the trowel. There are tools that you can use to identify and solve some of those vexing problems that may occur in the vegetable garden. We’ll take a look at internet resources and how to use them as well as our favorite, reliable old-fashioned books.
