New Farmer Series: Carbon Capture

  • Thursday, March 25, 2021, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM

Management of soil carbon can increase the amount of carbon in soil organic matter, which reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere and improves soil health. Soil carbon benefits soil health by improving water retention, reducing erosion, and increasing biological activity. Increasing the amount of carbon stored in soils has both agricultural and environmental benefits such as higher yields and lower CO2 emissions. Reducing CO2 emissions is important for mitigating the extent and impacts of climate change.

This workshop will offer a quick look into the topic of capturing carbon on the farm. The first guest speaker, Tokya Dammond, co-founder of Carbon Drawn, will talk about his company’s role in the Hudson Valley and how farmers can capture carbon on their farms.

The second guest speaker, Stephen Schafer, is a sheep farmer and climate activist. He and his wife Lizbeth own and operate Anchorage Farm in Saugerties, NY. Stephen will lay out some of the major cash flow considerations for row crop and small grain farmers who may be thinking about capturing carbon on their farm. Zoom information will be sent in your confirmation email.
