Intro to 4-H Forestry Program

  • Tuesday, December 4, 2018, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Ulster County youth ages 10-18 are invited to join 4-H educator Matt Helffrich in learning about the New York State 4-H Forestry Program by attending a meeting at the Cornell Cooperative Extension office in Kingston at 232 Plaza Rd on Wednesday December 4 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

This program is open to 4-H youth and the public. Attendees are required to register for this event at https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/forestry_251

Come discover the skills that Foresters must master to do their jobs including tree identification and measurement, navigation with a compass, reading a topographic map and tree pest insect identification. During this meeting, we will focus on tree identification skills and participants will discover other parts of the tree besides leaves that can be used to identify tree species.

Through the 4-H Forestry curriculum, youth will learn about forests, forestry skills and forest management and will begin to develop an appreciation for of the importance of conserving forests as a source of income, raw materials and recreation. Youth who participate in this informational meeting will be invited to join a short-term 4-H club with Forestry as the focus. We will plan future meetings for the coming months and work to create projects for the Ulster County Fair and prepare for the NYS Forestry Weekend that occurs at 4-H Camp Shankitunk in Delaware County the first weekend in May, 2019.
