4th Annual Grain School: Supplying Local Grains to Local Artisan Bakers

  • Friday, February 9, 2018, 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM

CCE Ulster County and the Capital Area Ag and Hort Program welcome you to the 4th annual Hudson Valley Value-Added Grain School.  This year we focus on supplying local grains to local artisan bakers. It will be a great opportunity for anyone interested in the grains industry to learn and network.  For information on past Grain School events go to tinyurl.com/CCE-Field-Crops.  

Location: Pegasus Restaurant and Banquet Hall, 10885 Route 9W, Coxsackie, NY (less than 10 miles off Catskill Exit 23 on I-87).

Grain School begins with registration and the Trade Show (open throughout the day) followed by a full day of talks (agenda below, with speak descriptions on right) and includes an outstanding lunch by Pegasus Restaurant.

8:30 AM: Check-in and registration, trade show and networking, snacks and refreshments

9:30 – 10:30: Developing a Local Grain Economy  - Loic Dewavrin, Les Fermes Longpres, organic grain producer and miller, Quebec

10:30 – 11:30: Baking Breads with Locally Produced Flour: The Art & Science - Randy George, Red Hen Baking, Vermont

11:30 – 11:45: A word from our Grain School Sponsors

11:45 to 12:05: Crop insurance presentation

12:05 to 1 PM: Catered lunch

1:00 – 2:00: Growing Organic Grains for the Local MarketLoic Dewavrin

2:00 – 2:30: How Grain Quality is Affected by Soils, Soil Fertility, and the Environment - Aaron Gabriel, Capital Area Ag & Hort Program

2:30 – 3:30: The Ancient Grains: A New Taste and Small-Scale Equipment - Elizabeth Dyck, Organic Growers’ Research and Information-Sharing Network (OGRIN)

3:30 PM: Adjourn

Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) credits have been applied for.


REGISTRATION

Attendees (includes lunch): $50 pre-registration by February 6, or $65 thereafter.

Trade Show: If you have an agribusiness, this event is a great opportunity to display your products and network with other individuals involved with the small grains industry in the region.

  • Trade Show tables are available for $75 each, and all exhibitors must also register as attendees. Deadline: February 6 for trade show registration.
  • If you can’t attend but would like to display literature on our Resource Table for $10, please pay using the registration form (online or mail) and mail literature by February 7 to Aaron Gabriel, CCE, 415 Lower Main St., Hudson Falls, NY 12839.
