Free Movie Night for Livestock Producers "American Meat"

  • Thursday, July 20, 2017, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

FREE and open to the public - children welcome with an adult

Join us for this second installment of our Movie Night for livestock producers, we’ll watch American Meat”, a solutions-oriented documentary chronicling the current state of the U.S. meat industry, taking an even-handed look at animal husbandry.

There will be time for discussion and Q&A about the film’s content. This is a chance to meet some of your fellow producers and gain exposure to new techniques and ideas.

Walk-ins are welcome or RSVP by 7/18 to Jason (845-340-3990 x327 or jbd222@cornell.edu).

The film first explains how America arrived at its current industrial system, then shifts to the present day, showing feedlots and confinement houses, not through hidden cameras but through the eyes of the farmers who live and work there.  Next the revolution taking root in animal husbandry is introduced through stories of farmers across the country who have changed their life to start grass-based farms.

Featured farmers include:

  • Joel Salatin with Polyface, Inc., a pasture-based, “beyond organic”, local-market farm in Virginia.
  • Chuck Wirtz, an Iowa farmer who spent 7 years raising antibiotic-free pigs that roam outdoors.
  • Fred Kirschenmann, a longtime leader in sustainable ag., president of Stone Barns Center for Food and Ag. in NY, and manager of his family's 1,800-acre certified organic farm in North Dakota.
  • Paul Willis, co-founder of Niman Ranch Pork Co. and a pioneer in pasture-raised livestock.
  • Steve Ells, founder, CEO, and Chairman of Chipotle Mexican Grill, which under his direction the chain serves what it describes as "naturally raised meat" and promotes sustainable agriculture.
