Home and Farm Integrated Pest Management

For the first time CCE Ulster is hosting the New York State Integrated Pest Management Team at our Kingston office. Specialists from NYSIPM will be presenting on topics handpicked by our Ag Team related specifically to Ulster County.


10:00 - Don’t Get Ticked!- Joellen Lampman 

Avoiding Lyme and other tick-borne diseases requires avoiding a tick bite! Joellen will discuss different ticks in our area, the diseases they carry, and how to protect yourself from being bitten. Free tick removal kits will be offered to attendees.

11:00 - Welcoming Beneficial Insects - Amara Dunn-Silver

This interactive talk will introduce you to some common beneficial insects - both pollinators and natural enemies of pests - that you might find on your farm or in your garden. We’ll also discuss ways you can welcome these beneficial insects to your spaces.

12:00-Lunch will be provided

1:00 - Organic vegetable pest management-Marion Zuefle

Learn the basics of organic farming. Cover essentials like companion planting, beneficial insects, crop rotation, row covers, trap crops, and the use of organic pesticides when required. Get practical insights from real-world examples, using key pests as case studies to illustrate practical solutions.

2:00 - Weed Management for Small Diversified Farms and Gardens - Bryan Brown

Bryan will provide an overview of common weed management tactics that target key “Achilles heels” of weed species. The session will then open up to a more interactive discussion with participants asked to provide examples of problematic weed species on their own farms or gardens.

The Presenters

Joellen Lampman 

Joellen is a Community IPM Extension Support Specialist with the New York IPM Program at Cornell University and a lifelong environmental educator. At the New York State IPM Program, she utilizes the clear knowledge-based, decision making process of IPM to teach ecology and make a difference, one property at a time. In some circles, Joellen is known as "The Tick Lady."


Amara Dunn-Silver

Amara Dunn-Silver is the Biocontrol Specialist with the New York State Integrated Pest Management Program. In this position she supports the effective use of biological control solutions to pests in all agricultural commodities, as well as pests encountered by New Yorkers where they live, work, play, and learn.

Marion Zuefle

 Marion Zuefle is the Vegetable Extension Specialist with the NYS IPM Program. Marion works closely with farmers and growers to identify and combat insect, disease, and weed pests at their farms.

Bryan Brown

Bryan’s extension and research aims to improve management of weeds, while minimizing the associated environmental, economic, and human health risks. His responsibilities include weed management in all agricultural crops and community settings in New York. His research interests include: integrated weed management, weed seedbank dynamics, improving cultivation efficacy.
