The Ulster County 4-H Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program is a year-long program for youth ages 8-12. The program will be led by Cornell Cooperative Extension staff and facilitated by volunteer Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners will guide the JMG cohort to become gardening leaders by guiding them through the gardening process, teaching them to answer horticulture questions and showing them how to act as resources for their friends and family. Throughout the year, the program will include activities such as field trips to nature centers or local farms, guest speakers, and opportunities for participants to take on leadership roles within the program. Participants will be encouraged to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for gardening with their clubs and the wider community, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and environmental stewardship.
Participants will meet monthly for educational meetings at the Kingston office and will also have "working" days at the 4-H Community Garden at the Ulster County Fairgrounds. The Junior Master Gardeners will be responsible for building, seeding, weeding, and harvesting this brand new 4-H Community Garden. They will also plan a seasonal display for the garden beds outside of the fair Youth Building.
To cover the cost of materials, this program has a fee of $50/participant. Scholarships are available, please reach out to learn more.
