Small Ruminant Parasite Control

Parasites are the most important limiting factor in small ruminant flocks. Learn how to monitor, treat and prevent parasites in your flock. In this online class, we will discuss the lifecycle and biology of parasites affecting small ruminants and demonstrate how to perform fecal sampling to obtain egg counts. Fecal sampling is a simple procedure you can do at home to approximate the parasite load your sheep or goats are carrying. Parasitic egg counts help you to make decisions on the effectiveness of your deworming program. We will also review the 5-point check for small ruminant health including an overview of FAMACHA and how it can help you to monitor and treat your sheep and goats. Registration closes on April 20.

Your Instructor
Classes are taught by Jason Detzel of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County. Jason is a social worker turned farmer and owner of Diamond Hills Farm, a pasture-based cow/calf operation in Hudson, New York. When he is not grazing, watering, or calving he serves at the Livestock Educator for CCE. He gets up early, tries to stay up late, and likes looking at his collection of unread books. He enjoys talking farm and has an opinion and possibly advice on most anything relating to livestock. He is happiest at that time of year when you can smell the soil but not the cold!
