Janie is one of our fabulous Nutrition Educators and a Master Food Preserver. She hosts a variety of fun, hands-on kitchen classes and also teaches EFNEP (Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program), a series of free nutrition classes for low-income families.
Janie graduated from The Restaurant School, Philadelphia in 1979 and spent 30 years cooking and managing kitchens. Beginning at Spago, Los Angeles, Janie worked as a prep cook and then as kitchen manager for Wolfgang Puck. During this time (1981-1982) she was introduced to the idea of “fresh and local”. Products such as fresh goat cheese, lamb and locally grown produce were delivered to the restaurant from local farmers. Fish was selected daily in Little Tokyo right from the boat.
In her spare time Janie loves to spend time in the woods learning about birds and wildflowers to paint or draw. She also canes chairs and repairs wicker furniture. In the future, Janie would love to eat her way around the world!
