  • Monday, February 18, 2019, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

This class has been moved from February 12 to February 18 due to inclement weather. If you are unable to attend this date, please reach out to Jason.

There has been a surge in interest for pastured and woodlot pig rearing in the last few years. This class will review best care practices for raising pigs and discuss some of the ways that producers can integrate pigs into their current production system.

Whether you're interested in beginning a 4-H project, putting the pig’s powerful noses to work improving your property, or raising your own delicious pork products, this class will review all that you need to know to get started.

Pigs are great introduction into raising livestock. Their inquisitive nature and friendly disposition makes them a fun animal to watch and to interact with. Pigs also can be managed to alter landscapes and improve fallow fields. Many progressive producers are starting to raise pigs on alternative feeds such as hay and leftover whey.

CCE Livestock Educator, Jason Detzel, who has years of experience raising pigs on his own property, will cover the basics of caring for pigs including:

  • Your town’s rules and regulations for keeping pigs
  • Pastured pig considerations
  • Housing, feeding, and watering needs
  • Best practices for pig health and management
  • Weather and predator concerns
  • The use of alternative feeds
  • Marketing your animals
  • Fencing needs
